EYFS Department

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

All children are special, unique, and learn in different ways. Our school days in Group 1 are carefully planned with this in mind. We aim to ensure that our children are feeling happy and engaged and that they are progressing on their own individual learning journey.

We provide learning opportunities for our children through teacher-led moments in areas such as Phonics or Maths. In Group 1, an important and very exciting part of our day is when children have large amounts of time dedicated to exploring their own curiosities in play! During child-led play we watch children's learning and curiosities unfold so we can help support our children and help them to develop.

Giving children autonomy in their play and allowing them to decide what to explore, who to play with and where, allows children to build and develop important skills:

  • resilience
  • collaboration
  • communication
  • problem-solving
  • creativity
  • establishing meaningful relationships with others

Our Curriculum

  • Our curriculum is built around the seven areas of learning. Our three prime areas are: communication and language, personal social and emotional development and physical development. Our 4 specific areas are literacy, maths, understanding the world and expressive arts and design.
  • We recognise that all seven areas of learning are important and inter-connected.
  • In Group 1, we place special emphasis on the three prime areas of learning.
  • It is important that children build strong foundations in communication and language, personal social emotional development and in physical development. These are integral to our day in Group 1. By building strong foundations in these three prime areas, this helps prepare our learners to better access the four areas of specific learning.
