What does English in the Primary Department look like?

At International School Haarlem we use The Power of Reading as a programme for English.

The Power of Reading is about teaching English through using high quality books and creative teaching approaches such as art and drama. This approach aims to engage and motivate children in their English learning and enables children to deepen their understanding of texts and provides a meaningful context for writing. It involves children regularly writing in different genres and creates a more cohesive learning experience, especially as we link the books to the IPC Topics.

Reading aloud is a key part of the Power of Reading. This allows all children to access quality texts and enables the teacher to model expressive and fluent reading to the children. This also helps to develop inference, deduction, and comprehension skills.
